City of Richmond Update - Burkeville Area Construction and Future Environmental Enhancement Information Session
Re: Update on Burkeville Area Construction and Future Environmental Enhancement Opportunities
The City of Richmond has been undertaking utility upgrades in the Burkeville community over the past few years. The work is ongoing and includes the design of a new drainage network to reduce local flood risks by increasing the City’s storm sewer capacity. The City will also be completing environmental enhancement and widening of the watercourses along Airport Road between Wellington Crescent and Handley Avenue this summer. This project will provide additional landscape planting, enhanced habitat, and improved drainage capacity in the area. Construction will continue in phases over the next four to six years. Please refer to the attached site map for details.
This work reflects the City’s commitment to providing infrastructure necessary to support the safety of Burkeville’s residents, businesses and properties. Future opportunities for environmental enhancement in the area are also being considered, including the potential closure of Airport Road between Handley Avenue to north of Hudson Avenue. This would create a more robust environmental corridor and additional drainage storage capacity, but will require an analysis of the impact on parking, pedestrians and traffic.
Community engagement is important for both current and future projects. That is why you are invited to an information session on the current utility upgrades and environmental enhancements, and possible future environmental enhancement opportunities in the area.
